Sam Heughan has strongly hinted at his rumored casting in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. It all started when the 46-year-old star was asked about the epic fantasy franchise at Wigtown Book Festival.

There, he teased that he may have recently been in New Zealand, where the Andy Serkis movie is being filmed.

"I'm not giving anything away, but I may have been in New Zealand recently," he said (via ComicBook).

While Heughan didn’t outright confirm his involvement in the film, his statement may be enough of a hint that he will appear in The Hunt for Gollum.

Another clue that he may be part of the cast emerged from a charity auction featuring a copy of The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien to benefit the ALS Network, a charity supporting people living with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as motor neuron disease.

The deluxe HarperCollins edition of the revised and expanded collection of letters features Tolkien’s signature blocked in gold on the cover, along with its original slipcase.

It’s also signed by The Hunt for Gollum stars and producers Sir Ian McKellen, Andy Serkis, Lee Pace, Jed Brophy, Zane Weiner, Phoebe Gittins, and Arty Papageorgiou. One eagle-eyed fan, @samjamie_stillhere (via Winter is Coming), also spotted Heughan’s name among the signatories.

While Warner Bros. has yet to confirm Sam Heughan’s casting, fans are already making assumptions about the role he might play.

Some believe he could play another Ranger alongside Strider (Jamie Dornan), especially since the story follows the search for Gollum and explores Aragorn’s background as a Ranger. This makes the introduction of another Ranger a strong possibility.

There are also suggestions that he could play Glorfindel, a legendary and powerful Elf from J.R.R. Tolkien’s lore.

Additionally, Heughan could portray Aragorn’s father, Arathorn, in flashback scenes that provide more context for Aragorn’s history, though it remains to be seen whether the movie will feature this storyline.

However, there’s also a chance that Heughan will play an entirely new character introduced specifically for the film.

In any case, fans are advised to take these theories with a grain of salt, as nothing has been confirmed yet.

Until Warner Bros. reveals more details, Heughan’s potential role in The Hunt for Gollum remains a mystery.

The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is set to be released in theaters on December 17, 2027.
