We know that Disney is planning on remaking The Little Mermaid for live-action, but we have barely gotten any solid updates on the film. What we do have is a celebration of the movie, marking its 30th anniversary.
This was shared by original Ariel voice actress Jodi Benson:
Benson has actually worked on the character of Ariel way after the release of the first film. She had voiced Ariel in The Little Mermaid series as well as all of her other appearances (including Kingdom Hearts!). Her most recent reprisal of the role was in last year's Ralph Breaks the Internet which brought back as many of the original Disney princess voices as the film could gather.
For this year, Disney is planning on releasing three live-action remakes of classics which include Dumbo, Aladdin, and The Lion King. The studio hasn't officially announced a Little Mermaid movie yet, but rumors have been swirling around last year that Spider-Man: Homecoming and The Greatest Showman actress Zendaya was being considered to star.
As for The Little Mermaid fans, all they can do is celebrate the 30 years that the film has made. Even after so long, the character of Ariel still manages to touch several kids just like it did back in the 90s, and that's what makes it one of the great Disney classics. I'm starting to think that even if a live-action movies does come out, it still won't hold a candle to the original animation.
I mean, just look at Beauty and the Beast.
Disney has yet to announce a live-action The Little Mermaid film.
