One Piece is facing controversy over a figurine of one of its characters, Jewelry Bonney, designed and dressed in a way that makes even the most dedicated fans roll their eyes, especially considering the fact that she is underage.
As one of the most popular shounen anime ever made, One Piece is no stranger to criticism regarding its characters. Bonney is among those who often become the subject of heated debate among viewers. Let’s take a closer look at the issue below!
Why the One Piece Jewelry Bonney Figurine Is Considered Problematic
MegaHouse has revealed several figurines set for release this year under the "Evolutionary History" collection, one of them being Jewelry Bonney.
After the reveal, some posts on X about the merch divided fans. The figurine received a lot of negative feedback for several reasons.
The main concern is that the Jewelry Bonney figure wears the outfit she has in One Piece’s Egghead arc.
At this point in the story, she is only 12 years old. This is why many fans feel uncomfortable seeing a figure of a minor being sold in an "oversexualized" manner, considering the pose and outfit choice.
Many are also questioning whether Eiichiro Oda approved this. However, there has been no confirmation on whether the creator of One Piece had any involvement.
MegaHouse describes the controversial Jewelry Bonney figurine as:
"This figure captures her in a dynamic pose, emphasizing her wild charm, bold allure, and energetic personality."
The Controversy Surrounding Jewelry Bonney
If you’re a big One Piece fan, you’ll know this isn’t the first time Bonney has been a topic of heated discussion.
Bonney is the captain of the Bonney Pirates and one of the members of the Worst Generation, a group of pirates known for their extraordinary strength.
In the Egghead arc, she teams up with the Straw Hat Pirates. Fans had previously paired her with Luffy due to their similarities, but they quickly changed their minds upon learning that she is actually only 12 years old.
As it turns out, Bonney has Devil Fruit powers that allow her to manipulate her age, and in this arc, she takes the form of a 22-year-old.
This made some early scenes in the Egghead arc controversial, particularly those where Bonney is shown topless. In the manga, she is only seen naked from the back, but the anime depicts her topless from the front.
Now, discussions about Bonney have resurfaced after the reveal of the figurine.
One side strongly opposes the pirate being turned into "fanservice" material again, while the other dismisses the backlash, arguing that these are just "drawings" and should not be compared to real people.
