Obi-Wan Kenobi was a huge success when it was released on Disney+. Despite being set as a limited series, there are hopes from fans and even Ewan McGregor himself that it will get a second season. After all, there are still a lot of stories to tell from the character before the events of A New Hope.
Speaking with Variety during the Star Wars Celebration event, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy was asked whether they are working on a second season of Obi-Wan Kenobi. She confirmed that nothing is in the works at the moment, but she didn't shoot down the possibility of it happening.
"That is not an active development. But I never say never, because there’s always the possibility. That show was so well-received and [director] Deborah Chow did such a spectacular job. Ewan McGregor really wants to do another," she said.
"Everybody’s all hands on deck with what we’re doing right now, as you can see by what we showed everybody [at the Celebration]. We’ll turn our attention to that again maybe down the road."
While it is a disappointing update on the show's potential future, it is still encouraging to hear from Kennedy herself that a second season is a possibility down the line and the show's proven success showed that an audience will show up if ever they decide to do a follow-up.
In addition, the ending of the series set some path on what direction they can take story-wise in the potential second season with the appearance of Force ghost Qui-Gon Jinn. There are also still around ten years before the events of A New Hope and Rebels has shown that the character had an interesting path after the series.
For now, let's just wait and see what Kennedy and her team at Lucasfilm have in store regarding the show's potential future or whether it will remain standalone as planned.
