Nikki Glaser recently admitted that her Benny Blanco joke during the Golden Globes ceremony was "pretty mean" in hindsight.
The comedian's hosting duty in the star-studded awards ceremony earlier this year was praised by fans and critics. As a result, she was soon hired to return as host in the next year's ceremony.
Nikki Glaser Reflects on Her Benny Blanco Joke at the Golden Globes
In a recent interview at the Time100 Summit, Glaser opened up about her acclaimed Golden Globes hosting duty and how "a reputation of being mean."
"But I’m hired to [be] mean for those. Golden Globes, it’s not my job to ruin their night," she said.
Glaser also reflected on her joke about Benny Blanco during the ceremony, where she said, "Selena Gomez is here with Benny Blanco, her new fiancé, and Benny Blanco is here because of the genie who granted him that wish."
She admitted that it "was kind of mean" in retrospect as she looked back at that moment.
"I said that Selena Gomez is here because of Emilia Pérez and Benny Blanco is here because the genie granted him that one wish, and looking back, I was like that was pretty mean," the comedian said.
"Because everyone’s like he’s not attractive enough for her and for me, I never looked at them and actually thought that. I feel like she won too with it, like I think he’s really cool."
However, Glaser also clarified that she got approval on the joke from Blanco and Gomez themselves before she said it on the live broadcast.
"He was like, ‘That’s hilarious, let me run it by Selena’ and I was like ‘Hell yeah,’ and then we were all waiting in the writer’s room like, ‘When is he going to write?’ and he wrote back and was like, ‘Selena thinks it’s great.’ So they gave me permission," she said.
Nikki Glaser Will Return to Host the 2026 Golden Globes
Last month, it was confirmed that Glaser has officially signed on to return as the host of the Golden Globes ceremony next year in January.
"Hosting the Golden Globes this year was without a doubt the most fun I have ever had in my career," the comedian said in the press release.
"I can’t wait to do it again, and this time in front of the team from The White Lotus who will finally recognize my talent and cast me in season four as a Scandinavian Pilates instructor with a shadowy past."
Glaser made history as the first solo female to host the Golden Globes ceremony. Despite the viewership being slightly down, her hosting performance was widely praised, and there was clamor for her to return next year before it became official.
