Nick Offerman slammed a meme that depicted his Parks and Recreation character, Ron Swanson, as a homophobic man.
As everyone knows, the Emmy-winning actor made his breakthrough in the hit sitcom. Although it ended its run 10 years ago, its long-lasting legacy has endured to this day, and it remains the subject of many online memes.
What is Nick Offerman's Reaction to the Homophobic Parks and Recreation Meme?
Michael Flynn Jr., son of former U.S. national security advisor Michael Flynn, posted a meme on X where Ron Swanson is throwing a rainbow flag in the dumpster.
"Just wanted to post how I feel about 'pride' month," he wrote.
However, in the original version of the clip from a season 4 episode of the series, Ron was actually throwing his computer.
This prompted a response from Offerman, where he called out Flynn's meme and pointed out that his character supported a gay wedding in the final episode.
The actor wrote, "Ron was best man at a gay wedding you dumb f*ck. #HappyPride."
As of the writing of this article, Offerman's post has garnered more than 516,000 likes and 45,000 reposts.
What is Nick Offerman's Allyship History?
Offerman has consistently shown his support to the LGBTQIA+ community throughout his career.
He won an Emmy for playing a gay survivalist in the acclaimed The Last of Us episode "Long, Long Time.
"Thanks to HBO for having the guts to participate in this storytelling tradition that is truly independent," he said in a speech when he won an Indie Spirit Award.
"Stories with guts, that when homophobic hate comes my way and says, ‘Why did you have to make it a gay story?’ We say, ‘Because you ask questions like that.’ It’s not a gay story. It’s a love story, you asshole. So more of that.'"
Offerman also shared his statement when his Parks and Recreation co-star Jonathan Joss was killed due to an alleged homophobic hate crime.
"The cast has been texting together about it all day, and we’re just heartbroken. Jonathan was such a sweet guy, and we loved having him as our Chief Ken Hotate. A terrible tragedy," he said.
