The highly anticipated Netflix adaptation of Devil May Cry is coming this April, and it’s bringing plenty of excitement! Dante has already taken the gaming industry by storm several times, but this time, he’s making his mark in an animated series created by Adi Shankar.
Recently, a newly released video of the show's opening has been blowing people away. Find out why and learn more about Netflix’s Devil May Cry below!
Devil May Cry Brings 2000s Nostalgia with Its Opening Credits
Devil May Cry is one of Capcom’s most successful franchises, and it is, inarguably, hugely popular among those born in the '90s, considering the game first rose to fame during the PS2 era.
Even though the hack-and-slash action-adventure game still gets love from the newer generation, especially with DMC 5 releasing in 2019, its fanbase was huge during the 2000s, thanks to its stylish combat, over-the-top action, and the effortlessly cool Dante.
The recent release of the opening credits is a testament to that, as many were surprised to hear the song Rollin’ by nu metal band Limp Bizkit from the album Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water.
The show's executive producer, Adi Shankar, posted on X that he believed the song was the right choice because the universe in his Devil May Cry is set in the early 2000s, the same era when the first game was released.
“My series features a mix of hits from that era and the greatest musical hits from the DMC franchise, reimagined by @powergloveaudio,” he explained. He also added that his own music taste will be reflected in the series.
The 2000s influence is even more evident in the opening credits video, which features stylish editing reminiscent of high-quality fan-made animated music videos or AMVs.
Everything We Know So Far About Netflix’s Devil May Cry
It was first announced by IGN in 2018 that Shankar would be adapting Devil May Cry. Given the overwhelming success of his other video game-inspired TV series, Castlevania, fans couldn’t wait for it to be released.
Since the series has been in development for seven years and was originally set to premiere in 2024, people have understandably wondered why it has taken so long.
Shankar reassured them in an interview with Netflix, stating that they have been "working very hard because we love the franchise and because we want to deliver something great."
The showrunner also boldly stated, "Our goal wasn’t just to pump out another animated show. My goal is to make one of the best shows on the Netflix platform."
So far, based on the teaser trailer released in September 2024, the fast-paced scenes where the protagonist, Dante, showcases his fluid combat moves suggest that Shankar’s statement holds true.
Alex Larsen, who also worked with Shankar on Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix, is the writer for the show. Studio Mir, the team behind The Legend of Korra and Voltron: Legendary Defender, is handling the animation. The series is also co-produced by Hideaki Itsuno, the director of Devil May Cry 3, 4, and 5.
The pizza-loving, white-haired protagonist will be voiced by Johnny Yong Bosch, who, interestingly, is also the voice of Nero in the DMC games.
Unfortunately for those hoping to hear Dante’s original voice actor, Reuben Langdon was not asked to reprise the role, but that’s a topic for another article.
The exclusive Netflix animated series Devil May Cry is releasing with 8 episodes on April 3, 2025.
