Four months after confirming an animated revival of Firefly in March, Nathan Fillion has shared a new update on the project while clarifying what fans can expect.
Fillion led the short-lived Fox series as Captain Malcolm "Mal" Reynolds in 2002 before reprising the role in the 2005 film Serenity.
Since then, however, fans have heard little about the renegade crew. So, is the Firefly revival still happening?
Is Firefly's Animated Revival Still Alive?
Nathan Fillion confirmed during a cast reunion at Awesome Con in Washington, DC, that an animated Firefly revival was in development.
Now, during a panel with former co-star Alan Tudyk at the recent MCM Comic Con in London, Fillion assured fans the project is still moving forward. However, he clarified that he had announced the development of the series–not that the series itself had been officially greenlit.
"Boy, it takes a lot longer than one would hope," Fillion said (via USA Today). "The development to get a show onto a television network or streaming platform. It's not easy work, Alan, or else everyone would do it, right?"
Tudyk then chimed in, comparing the development process to getting film photos developed.
"It's in process much like developing photos when we were young," he explained. "You go to a little box, guy who lives in a little house in a parking lot. That's how they would do it in the States, the Kodak part, and you drop them off to some guy who was certainly stoned, and you'd pick them up a little while later after he's done rifling through all of your personal images."
Using the analogy to describe the revival's progress, Tudyk said the project is currently in the "personal images" stage. While they're "not ready to pick them up" just yet, he assured fans they'll hear from the team as soon as there's something concrete to announce.
What to Expect from the Animated Firefly Revival?
While Firefly only ran for one season, it has remained a cult favorite ever since. With that being said, it's no surprise that fans have been clamoring for the show to return.
Thankfully, their calls were answered when Nathan Fillion announced that an animated Firefly revival was in development. According to ScreenRant, a live-action revival isn't feasible because of the cast's busy schedules, with Fillion himself now part of James Gunn's DC Universe as Guy Gardner/Green Lantern.
Although creator Joss Whedon is not involved in the revival, Fillion revealed that the filmmaker has given the project his blessing.
The animated series will be led by new showrunners Marc Guggenheim and his wife, Tara Butters, and will be set between the events of the original series and the 2005 film Serenity, before the deaths of several major characters.
As a result, fans shouldn't expect major changes to the characters' established fates or any alterations to the franchise's canon. Instead, the animated revival is expected to preserve the original continuity, with character designs resembling the cast's younger selves to create a seamless experience for longtime fans.
