Morbius star Jared Harris opened up about the real reason why he decided to join the maligned movie.
The Sony's Spider-Man Universe (SSU) installment notably flopped when it was released in early 2022 as it was both panned by the critics and underperformed at the box office compared to the Venom films.
Despite setting up a storyline in a potential sequel, Sony has not confirmed any plans to continue the journey of Jared Leto's character, but the reception may have put the nail in the coffin on that possibility.
Jared Harris on Why He Joined the Cast of Morbius
In a recent interview, Harris opened up about why he decided to join the cast of Morbius and admitted that it was all due to financial need.
"I have got a mortgage to pay, you know. Sometimes you say yes to things because you need to make money," he explained.
"I have observed that those types of films do well if you have a sense of humour. You can’t treat it as though it’s Shakespeare. So yeah, that movie could have done with a more mischievous sense of humour."
Some actors in the past have also admitted that they signed up to do a big-budget IP movie to get a big paycheck so it's not surprising to hear that it is the same case with Harris.
You can't blame them for making such a choice since it's still a job for them. In addition, being part of an IP film could also be seen as a career boost as it puts them in the consciousness of the mainstream audience.
While Morbius ended up becoming a flop, it did not necessarily affect Harris' career as he only had a supporting role and was not the big driving force behind the film.
Hopefully, Harris will be able to join another superhero movie soon where he will have a more three-dimensional role and truly showcase his talent as an actor in a different way rather than just being a forgettable mentor to the main character.
