Mindhunter's first season portrayed Jonathan Groff and Holt McCallany's characters as they attempted to build an FBI behavioral section. The second season had the duo researching the tragic Atlanta child killings of 1979-1981 while teasing the appearance of Dennis Rader, also known as The BTK Killer. Mindhunter Season 3 would have centered on Rader's crimes.
In a recent interview with the French magazine Le Journal du Dimanche, director David Fincher confirmed that a third season of Mindhunter will never be produced.
Why There Will Be No Mindhunter Season 3
Fincher has implied in the past that the decision to terminate the series was his due to his involvement in other projects, but it is possible that this is not the case.
"I'm very proud of the first two seasons. But it's a very expensive show and, in the eyes of Netflix, we didn't attract enough of an audience to justify such an investment," Fincher said. "I don't blame them, they took risks to get the show off the ground, gave me the means to do Mank the way I wanted to do it and they allowed me to venture down new paths with The Killer. It's a blessing to be able to work with people who are capable of boldness. The day our desires are not the same, we have to be honest about parting ways."
Netflix to Focus On Other David Fincher Projects
Given his lengthy relationship with Netflix, Fincher's lack of bitterness is not surprising. He won a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Directing in a Drama Series for the pilot of House of Cards, for which he served as executive producer and director before Mindhunter.
Fincher has directed Mank, a black-and-white picture about the making of Citizen Kane, since signing a four-year exclusive contract with the streaming service in 2020.
His most recent Netflix production is The Killer, which will debut on Nov. 10 and is based on a French graphic novel and stars Michael Fassbender.
