A new report claimed that award-winning filmmaker Luca Guadagnino is set to direct a DCU movie that will focus on an unexpected character.
Since the establishment of DC Studios, James Gunn and Peter Safran have been recruiting high-profile directors, writers, and actors to partake in the inception of the new DCU franchise.
While we already have the details on some of the projects that they've been working on, fans are still eager to learn more about what they have in store for the franchise and what other characters they will bring to the screen.
Luca Guadagnino Reportedly Attached to Direct Sgt. Rock Movie for DCU
It was reported that Guadagnino is set to direct a Sgt. Rock movie as part of DC Studios' DCU franchise.
Justin Kuritzkes, who worked with the filmmaker on Challengers and the upcoming film Queer, is set to collaborate with him again as he is attached to write the screenplay.
In case you're not familiar with the character, Sgt. Rock is a soldier who served as an infantry non-commissioned officer during World War II. The film is expected to be a period piece in that era as well.
So far, DC Studios has not confirmed the claims in the report, but insider Jeff Sneider corroborated the rumor as he also reported that Guadagnino and DC Studios have been in talks for the past few months.
If Guadagnino's DCU hiring ends up being true, it will be a shocking development as he is not the type of filmmaker that most fans would think of to get involved in the franchise and he would be an impressive hire for DC Studios.
However, Sgt. Rock is not a familiar DC character for the general audience (or even hardcore DC fans) so this is also a surprising choice as a potential movie that they will do. It would be interesting whether DC Studios will commit to the niche aspect of the project.
Whether the movie will happen or not, this is a sign that DC Studios is making itself a filmmaker-friendly studio and they are open to working with acclaimed directors who are not usually involved in a major franchise.
Guadagnino has proven in his acclaimed films such as Call Me by Your Name that he is a wonderful filmmaker, and perhaps he can bring some of that magic to the DCU.
