A Recap on Why Lord Toranaga Left the Council of Regents
Shōgun is four episodes away from ending and we're already on the edge of figuring out Lord Toranaga's greatest plan in mind: the Crimson Sky.
But before we get into that, here's a little refresher on why Lord Toranaga resigned from his post on the Council of Regents.
Initially, the Council of the Regents was composed of Lord Toranaga, Ishido Kazunari, Kiyama Ukon Sadanaga, Ohno Harunobu, and Sugiyama.
Out of the five Regents, Toranaga is considered the most powerful and most influential member among the rest. So, impeaching him from his post would be a great loss to the Minowara bloodline.
However, before Lord Toranaga even gets removed from his position, he silently resigns on his own, posing a threat to the Council as this potentially means Toranaga has made his move against the four members.
Because of this, Lady Ochiba and the Council of Regents make their own in Shōgun episode 6 titled Ladies of the Willow World.
Meet Lord Ito, the Man Who Replaced Lord Toranaga's Position
By the sixth episode, a fifth official member has been chosen. However, things aren't as smooth sailing in joining the four other members, all of whom are seeking Lord Toranaga's failure and death.
Therefore, the fifth member, whoever they may be, must be on board with the rest of the council's plan.
Due to Lady Ochiba's impatience with Ishido's decision-making to welcome their fifth member, she takes the situation into her own hands by holding them hostage and forcing them to solidify their choice. In this case, it was Lord Ito.
Lord Ito was a devout follower of the late Taiko, aka the deceased husband of Lady Ochiba. Having a man she can trust on the council could do wonders in manipulating their plans herself.
This strategy would then force Lord Toranaga into making his next move, which is the Crimson Sky plan, one which would force Toranaga to take down all the regents with his army.
