The live-action remake of Lilo and Stitch triumphed over Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning at the record-breaking Memorial Day weekend box office.
There has been anticipation on how the competition between the two major tentpole films will fare, considering that they both have different audiences and highly anticipated summer releases.
How Much Did Lilo and Stitch Earn at Memorial Day Weekend Opening?
According to Variety, Lilo and Stitch earned a massive $183 million in the Memorial Day weekend box office, making it the highest opening ever in the holiday's history.
Worldwide, the film has already grossed more than $300 million, and it has strong box office numbers in international markets. It easily recouped its production budget of $100 million.
While it remains to be seen whether it will have legs in the coming weeks, there is no doubt that it is already one of the biggest movies of the year and is seen as one of the biggest summer releases.
It won't be surprising at this point if the film ends up grossing more than $1 billion by the end of its run, since it is one of the few family-friendly entertainment options during the summer season.
In comparison, the original animated film in 2002 only grossed $273 million worldwide, and it became a more iconic Disney title when it hit home video and spawned a franchise.
How Did Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning Perform at Memorial Day Weekend?
Meanwhile, Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning grossed an estimated $77 million in the Memorial Day opening weekend.
This is still an impressive record for the film since it is the franchise's best and shows that it managed to also bring the older demographic to the movie theaters.
Worldwide, the film has already grossed more than $200 million, as it also performed well in the international market.
While the numbers are not as big as Lilo and Stitch, it is still an encouraging performance for the Tom Cruise movie, considering that it is likely the final installment of the franchise.
