Liev Schreiber has recently made his feelings clear when it comes to his daughter, Kai, who came out as trans, embracing her identity.
Considering the timely criticisms on the UK Supreme Court ruling on the trans community, Schreiber's words are one of the many statements that should matter in these trying times.
Liev Schreiber Gets Candid About Teen Daughter's Coming Out
"Kai was always who Kai is," the former X-Men Origins actor told Variety on Thursday, ahead of the Ali Forney Center-hosted gala, which is in support of providing housing for homeless LGBTQIA+ youth.
"But I suppose the most profound moment was her asking us to change her pronouns," Schreiber added, all the while considering it was no surprise, "[It] didn't feel like that big of a deal because Kai had been feminine for so long."
His daughter, Kai, made her runway debut at Paris Fashion Week, modeling for Valentino's March 9 exhibition. Liev was seen in the comments gushing for Kai's success, "Beyond Beyond Kai."
"Kai is such a fighter," he said on Variety, "It's important that she goes, 'Hey, I am trans' and 'Look at me' and 'F**k you. F** off.'"
And he only has one advice for parents whose children are trans: No matter how they were brought up or what religion they practice, "I guess if I would say anything to someone who's having trouble with their trans teen or adolescent trans kid, it's 'Teenagers are a f***ing headache. They're hard.'"
But kidding aside, Liev highlighted, "It doesn't matter whether they're trans or not, because you'll come out of this."
"But a trans teen is going to be a teen. They're such a pain in the a** so much of the time, and Kai is as feisty and outspoken as they come."
The Schreiber Family is Offering Support for Homeless LGBTQIA+ Youth
Apart from Kai and Liev, his wife, Taylor Neisen, will be supporting the Ali Forney Center, one of the largest non-profit organizations providing shelter and healthcare for the LGBTQIA+ youth who remain defenseless from their own family.
"This isn't just about representing the trans community," Liev explained, "This is actually a community of people who don't have great resources, who don't have access to help, who aren't being protected and looked after by their families."
He continued, "These are people who are being rejected. These are people who are experiencing the harshest version of humanity that we can offer, and some of them are not surviving it."
The United Kingdom Supreme Court ruling on April 16 threatens the rights of trans people by declaring that "sex" in UK law refers to the person's sex assigned at birth.
In effect, trans people are prohibited from entering single-sex spaces that align with their gender identity, even if they receive official recognition from the government.
Liev shared some thoughts on the political and social attacks the trans community continues to face, and admits that he wants to remain hopeful about their future.
"I don't like to dwell on it too much," he said, "To some degree, I feel like I don't want to overcook that fear or that anxiety. There's enough in the world to be anxious and afraid about."
