Studio Orange and Netflix announced the Leviathan anime and its release date window. This upcoming anime did not get a trailer, but new screenshots were revealed that give fans more ideas of what to expect.
Leviathan is the latest anime from Orange as the studio has not released any new series since Trigun: Stampede last year.
Interestingly, this is quite an unexpected project for the studio as it’s not based on a manga like most anime. Instead, it’s an adaptation of an alternate-history steampunk novel.
Leviathan Release Date Predictions
Over the years, Orange has become one of the premier anime studios for 3DCG shows. One of its biggest hits is the Land of the Lustrous anime adaptation, which they followed up with Beastars.
The Beastars anime premiered in 2019 on Netflix, and it was followed up by another season, with a third season coming later this year.
This isn’t the only partnership between Orange and Netflix, as the studio also worked on Netflix’s Godzilla Singular Point anime alongside Bones (of My Hero Academia fame).
Now, it seems that Orange and Netflix’s partnership is showing no signs of fading as they have a new project in the works titled Leviathan.
Alongside the anime’s reveal, it was confirmed that the series will be released worldwide in 2025, though there’s no specific release date yet.
Orange typically has longer production timelines for its 3DCG works. After all, it has been nearly a year since Trigun: Stampede ended, and the studio has yet to finish work on Beastars’ final season.
As such, the Leviathan anime will likely be released in mid-2025 at the earliest, likely around July 2025.
The Leviathan Anime’s Expected Netflix Streaming Schedule
For now, it’s not clear what the show’s schedule will look like. Given that it’s a Netflix anime, all episodes of the show’s first season may be released in one day.
On the flip side, if this anime will also get a TV broadcast in Japan, then the show will be more likely to have a typical weekly release schedule.
As the show’s premiere is still a year away, we’ll have to wait a while longer before more details are shared.
Exploring Leviathan’s Intriguing Alternate-History Story
Story-wise, Leviathan is a promising series for history buffs as it’s set in 1914 during World War I.
Instead of being a standard historical series, the show will feature an alternate take on history. Here, the Central Powers use mechanized war machines while the Triple Entente creates living creatures to use in battle.
Thus, the Central Powers has a more steampunk style while biopunk is the theme of the Triple Entente’s war creatures.
The story follows a prince on the run who encounters a girl in disguise in the bioengineered airship called the HMS Leviathan. Their encounters will then change the course of the war.
