Leonardo DiCaprio recently opened up about the importance of One Battle After Another to become a box office success in its theatrical release this weekend.
The Oscar-winning actor finally collaborated with acclaimed director Paul Thomas Anderson in the new film, decades after he turned down starring in Boogie Nights. Since his global breakthrough role in Titanic, he has become one of the biggest movie stars, and most of his films have also become huge box office successes. One Battle After Another will be another test of whether his involvement will draw a lot of audiences.
Why One Battle After Another Needs to Be a Box Office Success, According to Leonardo DiCaprio
In his recent interview with Variety, DiCaprio stressed the importance of box office success in every theatrical film that gets released today, including One Battle After Another.
"I think there’s just an inundation of content and so much production going on now — which is a good thing, obviously. But I think box office is important because it means people are in the seats going to theater, going to have that communal experience," he explained.
In the case of One Battle After Another, which reportedly has a production budget of around $130 million, Anderson made it "uniquely crafted and specialized" for the big-screen experience.
"I mean, Paul shot this movie in Vista Vision — cameras that have rarely been used since the early ‘60s," DiCaprio explained.
"He wants people to have that immersive experience and make an action film that’s unexpected, tactile, realistic, and something that is probably a lot different than what we’ve been saturated with. In that respect, box office is very important."
The Oscar winner concluded, "I would only hope that people go out to the theater and experience it the way it’s meant to be seen."
What is One Battle After Another About?
One Battle After Another focuses on Bob, a washed-up revolutionary who lives in a state of stoned paranoia, surviving off-grid with his spirited and self-reliant daughter, Willa. When his evil nemesis resurfaces and Willa goes missing, the former radical scrambles to find her as both father and daughter battle the consequences of their pasts.
Aside from DiCaprio, the cast also includes Sean Penn, Regina Hall, Benicio del Toro, Teyana Taylor, Chase Infiniti, Wood Harris, and Alana Haim. Anderson wrote and directed the film.
It is already hailed by critics as one of the best films this year, as it has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 98% as of this writing. It is also getting a lot of early Oscar buzz, and it is now seen as one of the contenders for Best Picture and other categories.
