Film fans were dripping in nostalgia last year when Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss returned for the fourth installment in The Matrix franchise, nearly two decades after The Matrix Revolutions was released. Unfortunately, the highly-anticipated comeback of Neo and Trinity in The Matrix Resurrections fell flat, grossing only $157 million at the global box office.
On top of that, the original trilogy's fans had mixed feelings about Resurrections and as it turns out, even one of the franchise's original cast members didn't find the film appealing overall. Speaking with Variety, Laurence Fishburne criticized the fourth Matrix film and even said that he doesn't regret missing out on it.
When asked whether or not he got the chance to see the film last year, the Morpheus actor said: "It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, and it wasn't as good as I hoped it would be. But I thought Carrie-Anne and Keanu really did their thing. Yeah, that's what I thought."

To be fair, sequels are always tricky, especially the ones which have a wide gap from their predecessor, and The Matrix Resurrections just happened to be put in an unenviable position of trying to recapture the magic of the original trilogy.
Now, whether or not Warner Bros. Discovery will actually pull the trigger on producing a fifth sequel remains to be seen but I think we can all agree that the poor performance of Resurrections is a dead giveaway. But you can never say never, right?
The Matrix Resurrections is available to stream on HBO Max.
