Pokemon games were much simpler before; you see a fire-type Pokemon, simply use a water-type to defeat it. Thanks to newer games, Pokemon battles have become much more competitive in recent years, with fans utilizing status boosts, abilities, and trying to make sure that the hidden attributes (seriously) were maxed out. The latest Pokemon Sword & Shield trailer introduces even more battle strategies, thanks to new items and Pokemon abilities.
The newly revealed Galarian Weezing has an ability called Neutralizing Gas, which turns off the abilities of every Pokemon nearby. However, it also disables the ability of its partner in a Double Battle, so players have to be wary of having this Pokemon on their team.
We also get new Held Items in Room Service and Eject Pack. Room Service will lower the Pokemon's speed during Trick Room. Eject Pack switches out your Pokemon if its status lowers during a match, which sounds like overkill.
Game Freak also unveiled a new move called Break Swipe, which attacks both Pokemon in a Double Battle. Break Swipe also lowers the attack of the Pokemon it attacks, so that should be useful in tournament battles.
Corviknight, one of the brand-new Pokemon in this region, has an ability called Mirror Armor. This is fairly useful since it reflects all status debuffs, making it an essential Pokemon for some tournament play. Then again, it could also get banned since that might be ruled as unfair.
Finally, Dynamax moves will have a ton of arena effects during team battles. These can range from changing the environment in favor of certain Pokemon types and buffing/de-buffing in various battles. Also, Pokemon can shrug off moves that would normally make them flinch, so that's nuts.
Overall, this should please fans who really like their Pokemon battles. It's always good to have more competitive fights in Pokemon games, though yours-truly will stick with the basic weakness fights.
Pokemon Sword & Shield are coming out on November 15 for the Nintendo Switch.
