On January 29, Khloé Kardashian and motivational speaker Mel Robbins sat down for a conversation on the Khloé in Wonderland podcast.

The Keeping Up with the Kardashians star has never shied away from sharing details about her relationship with Lamar Odom. So when Robbins asked if she had ever been in a situation where she knew what she needed to do but couldn’t bring herself to do it, Kardashian had a candid response.

She recalled, “My ex-husband had a drug addiction. And I knew that his addiction always heightened when he was in the NBA. It always got worse during the off-season because idle time is the devil’s playground.”

Kardashian also shared that she remembered Odom being invited to join Team USA. She had urged him to go, but his response was, “You can’t want it more than I do.”

“It was so profound,” the 40-year-old entrepreneur said. She also mentioned that Odom didn’t want her to push him, even though she genuinely wanted to motivate him. To her, this was a clear sign that “he wasn’t in his place.”

The reality TV icon said this was the moment she had to face some harsh truths. She recalled saying to herself, “Yeah, you’re right. I can’t want your life more than you.”

Aside from his drug relapse in 2013, Odom was also involved in a cheating scandal, which led Kardashian to file for divorce. However, the legal process wasn’t finalized until 2016.

Due to being young and inexperienced, Kardashian admitted she once believed she could change Lamar. The two wed in 2009 when they were still in their 20s.

The Good American co-founder later shared on the Khloé in Wonderland podcast that marrying Lamar and witnessing his drug abuse shifted her perspective on relationships.

She reflected, “In hindsight, I was like, I don’t wanna be with someone that does [hard drugs], even just a little. Because it could easily be a slippery slope. But you’re in love, and you’re like, ‘It’s fine.’”

Kardashian also revealed that Odom was skilled at hiding his addiction, and it took her about a year and a half to realize what was going on.

In 2015, Odom nearly overdosed at a Nevada brothel. Since their divorce hadn’t been finalized, Kardashian paused the proceedings until he recovered.

Today, Kardashian and Odom remain good friends. The former NBA star even revealed on The Kyle and Jackie O Show that he has since found someone special.
