Katy Perry managed to perform a song during the all-female Blue Origin NS-31 space flight yesterday, but she did not opt to sing one of her songs.
Since the announcement that she would be part of Blue Origin's all-female space flight, some fans have been speculating whether she would be singing her own song while in space and which one from her discography she might perform.
However, as it turns out, she opted to perform an iconic classic song instead.
Katy Perry Sang 'What a Wonderful World' While in Space
In a post-flight interview, Gayle King, one of Perry's crewmates in Blue Origin NS-31, revealed that the singer performed "What a Wonderful World" during the flight.
While her crewmates suggested that she should sing some of her own songs, Perry opted to sing the Louis Armstrong classic as a tribute to their planet.
"The best part was when we got back in our seats after zero-Gs, Katy sang ‘What a Wonderful World,’" King said.
"We’ve been asking her to sing all the time, and she wouldn’t. Everybody said, ‘Sing ‘Roar.’ Sing ‘Firework.’ And she said, ‘It’s not about me. I wanted to talk about the world.’"
However, Blue Origin has not released any footage of Perry singing during the flight.
Katy Perry Explains Why She Didn't Perform Her Own Song
Perry explained in the same post-flight interview why she decided not to perform her own song while in space.
"I think that it’s not about me. It’s not about singing my songs. It’s about a collective energy in there," she said.
"It’s about us. It’s about making space for future women and taking up space and belonging. And it’s about this wonderful world that we see right out there, and appreciating it. This is all for the benefit of Earth."
Perry also shared that being part of an all-female space flight was "second to being a mom" in terms of her life accomplishments.
She added, "That’s why it was hard for me to go ’cause that’s all my love right there, and I have to surrender and trust that the universe is gonna take care of me and protect me and also my family and my daughter."
Aside from Perry and King, Aisha Bowe, Amanda Nguyen, Kerianne Flynn, and Lauren Sanchez were also part of the Blue Origin NS-31 crew. The entire flight lasted 10 minutes and 21 seconds.
