Kate Middleton Cried After Prince William Did This
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge took their time when they were dating. Unlike Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, Prince William and Middleton started as friends and were together for over five years before the second in line to the throne proposed to the duchess.
Prince William and Middleton also had an on-again, off-again relationship. They split twice before he got on his knees to ask her hand.
Royal biographer Katie Nicholl revisited their relationship in her 2011 book The Making of a Royal Romance. According to Nicholl, in 2006, before they were married, Prince William made Middleton cry when he suddenly canceled their planned holiday vacation.
The future king promised his then-girlfriend to spend the holidays with her and her family. However, he changed his mind and decided to spend it with the royal family instead, which didn't sit well with Middleton.

Prince William "informed a tearful Kate during a late-night conversation on Boxing Day." While the duke's decision seemed "no big deal" for him, it was a "sign of something more sinister to come."
"She [Kate] had good reason to be concerned," Nicholl added. "William had been having second thoughts and sat down with his father and his grandmother to have a frank discussion about his future with Kate. Both advised him not to hurry into anything."
Following Prince William's conversation with the Queen and Prince of Wales, the Cambridges briefly split in 2007.

Prince William and Kate Middleton realized that they are best together than apart. So, they reconciled shortly after the breakup.

The Duke of Cambridge proposed to Middleton in November 2010. During their engagement interview, both confirmed that they briefly separated.
Prince William said they were very young at the time and were still finding themselves. Middleton said she wasn't happy about the split, but it somehow helped her.
"I think I at the time wasn't very happy about it, but actually it made me a stronger person," the Duchess of Cambridge said.
