Kate Middleton and Prince William's royal romance unfolded for nearly a decade before they tied the knot. According to a royal biographer, the Princess of Wales didn't want to make it easy for her future husband.
Kate Middleton Rebuffed Prince William's Attempt To Kiss Her?
Vanity Fair royal correspondent and editor Katie Nicholl recounted the Prince and Princess of Wales' relationship in her book The Making of a Royal Romance. According to her, Middleton caught the heir to the throne's attention during a fashion show when they were still students.
"Wow, Kate's hot!" Prince William said, according to Nicholl's book (via Showbiz CheatSheet).
"William leaned in to kiss her. Kate pulled away, momentarily stunned that he had been so cold in a room full of strangers." Nicholl continued, "It was clear to us that William was smitten with Kate. He told her she was a knockout that night, which caused her to blush.
"She played it very cool, and at one point, when William seemed to lean in to kiss her, she pulled away. She didn’t want to give off the wrong impression or make it too easy for Will."
Why It Took So Long For Prince William To Propose To Kate Middleton?
Prince William proposed to Middleton in 2010 after an eight-year on-off relationship. The couple even joked during their engagement interview that they already forgot how many years they had been together before their engagement because his proposal took so long.
"We've talked about this happening for a while, so Kate wasn't in the dark. We've been planning it for a year, if not longer. It was just finding the right time. As most couples say, it's all about timing," Prince William explained. "I'm trying to learn from lessons done in the past. I just wanted to give her the best chance to settle in."
"I had my military career; I wanted to concentrate on my flying. However, I couldn’t have done this if I was still doing my training. Kate’s in a good place regarding work and where she wants to be. We just decided that now would be a really good time."
In his book, Nicholl claimed that Prince William was adamant about marrying Kate Middleton because he wanted to ensure that his marriage would not end up like his parents, Princess Diana and King Charles, who got divorced. The Duke of Cambridge was reportedly aware that his dad was pressured to find the perfect bride, and he didn't want to settle unless he was sure.
"He was reluctant to bow to similar pressure and vowed not to be hurried to the altar," Nicholl wrote.
