Justin Theroux Reveals How Rian Johnson Reduced His Role In Star Wars The Last Jedi

There certainly were a lot of awesome cameos in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. However, Justin Theroux has just revealed that his Master Codebreaker was supposed to play a larger role in the film. Interestingly, the Leftovers star shared how director Rian Johnson gradually reduced his character's appearance in Episode VIII.

Theroux recently spoke to CinemaBlend about his cameo in The Last Jedi and the actor confessed that Johnson had initially intended the Master Codebreaker at Canto Bight to have a significant role. Unfortunately, it was eventually reduced to an extremely brief appearance.

"It was one of those things. Rian called me a couple of years before making it, and said, 'Hey, there's this character, blah, blah, blah.' And I think over the course of the making the character became reduced, as they sort of locked in on what the overall thing was. And then he sort of called me last minute, I'd sort of forgotten about it, and then he called me last minute and said, 'Hey, it's really essentially a cameo, and sort of a punchline. Would you like to come in and play this part?' And I thought, 'Sure, that'd be...' I mean, come on!"

It's possible that the Master Codebreaker, who happens to be connected to Maz Kanata, was initially meant to actually help Finn and Rose Tico. Nevertheless, Theroux is still happy to have been a part of the Star Wars film.

"There's people who are dying to just put on a Stormtrooper outfit. And so it was great. I got one of the sort of more, to me, memorable scenes, with the hyper whacked out casino scene. Just to be on that set is just, obviously, I'm a huge Star Wars fan and it's a childhood dream. It was one of those 'come to London for a week, put on a costume, and also a crazy mustache, and do it.' So it was fun."

We're certainly happy for Theroux. However, it is still unclear if the Master Codebreaker will eventually return in the follow-up to The Last Jedi.

Star Wars: Episode IX will hit theaters on December 20, 2019.
