It was recently announced that the John Wick franchise's Caine spinoff movie is officially moving forward at Lionsgate, with production set to begin next month.
Aside from reprising the role from the fourth film, Donnie Yen is also directing the spinoff project and serves as executive producer. Mattson Tomlin wrote the screenplay. Rina Sawayama, who played Akira in the fourth film, is also set to co-star and reprise her role.
The story will take place after the events of the fourth movie, where Caine was released from his role with the High Table. It is being described as "a modern-day classic Hong Kong-style kung-fu movie."
"What drew me to Caine is the contradiction. He carries love, responsibility, and sacrifice in a world built on consequence. That creates a very different kind of action hero," Yen said in a statement regarding the project.

Is John Wick 5 Already in the Works?
As the Caine spinoff movie is currently preparing for production, fans are also wondering whether a fifth John Wick movie is also in the works at the same time.
Last year, Lionsgate officially announced that they are developing a fifth John Wick movie, with Keanu Reeves back as the iconic character and Chad Stahelski returning to direct.
"The saga of John Wick was pretty wrapped up. So the only way to do a 5 is to have a new story that involves John Wick. It’s not a continuation with the High Table. John dealt with his grief," Stahelski teased the storyline to Empire.
"It will be really different, and everybody [will] see the trailer and go, ‘Holy f***... I gotta see that.’ Of course we will – it’s a John Wick movie."
