J.K. Rowling’s latest post on social media suggests that her conflict with the original Harry Potter trio, Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint, remains unresolved.
The author has been outspoken about her views on sex, gender, and trans rights, while the trio has expressed opposing opinions, leading to their ongoing disagreement.
J.K. Rowling vs the OG Harry Potter Trio: Exploring Their Ongoing Disputes and Current Stances
J.K. Rowling’s issues with actors Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint resurfaced after a reposted tweet on X recently went viral.
The Harry Potter author appeared to reference the trio when she responded to the question, “What actor/actress instantly ruins a movie for you?” with, “Three guesses. Sorry, but that was irresistible.”
Her commenters quickly caught on, and the replies were divided. Some sided with Rowling, with one reply stating, “The question asked for actors/actresses—I don’t think that includes ‘talentless and privileged little oiks.’”
Meanwhile, a commenter who opposed her beliefs posted, “Classy. Real classy. There are better ways to get attention than trying to beef with people 30 years younger than you, ya know, but no better way to look like the bitter old woman you’ve become. You’re such a disappointment, JK.”
Fans of the Wizarding World began taking sides in 2020 when Rowling reacted to the article “Opinion: Creating a More Equal Post-COVID-19 World for People Who Menstruate” by tweeting, “I’m sure there used to be a word for those people. Someone help me out. Wumben? Wimpund? Woomud?”
Following that post, a series of tweets that began with, “If sex isn’t real,” sparked mixed opinions. Those who labeled her “transphobic” believed she would be “canceled” over her statements, but this was just the beginning of her using social media to express her stance.
Rowling later explained in an article on her website that her interest in trans issues started while researching a character for a crime series.
Her research on trans activism led her to share her “worries” about the future of society, including the health risks and side effects of cross-sex hormones, in a 2020 post.
The Original Harry Potter Cast Who Support Trans Rights
Since Rowling began advocating for women’s rights and criticizing trans issues, she has faced abuse and death threats, and media associated with her work has been called out for boycotts.
Naturally, some of the people she worked with have distanced themselves from her, most notably the three main actors of Harry Potter.
Radcliffe, Watson, and Grint were quick to release statements showing support for trans individuals. Bonnie Wright, who played Ginny Weasley, also reassured her followers on X that she stands with the trans community.
Rowling’s relationship with the original Harry Potter cast appears to have soured after this, as shown in her reply to a user’s comment on X about the trio giving her a public apology.
“Celebs who cosied up to a movement intent on eroding women’s hard-won rights and who used their platforms to cheer on the transitioning of minors can save their apologies for traumatised detransitioners and vulnerable women reliant on single-sex spaces,” Rowling said, supporting the Cass Review, which discusses the effects of puberty blockers, and implying that she will never forgive the three actors.
