J.J. Abrams Promises Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker is Going to be 'More Daring'

Star Wars: The Force Awakens might have been a commercial and critical success for Lucasfilm, however, the movie was criticized for taking too many notes from Star Wars: A New Hope. Now, The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams promises that he's taking more risks with his new Star Wars movie, The Rise of Skywalker.

Speaking in an interview with Total Film (via the site's sister publication, Games Radar) to help promote the third installment in Lucasfilm's Star Wars sequel trilogy, Abrams tries to point out the difference working on The Force Awakens and The Rise of Skywalker. According to the filmmaker, he had a less restrictive approach working on the upcoming Star Wars entry.

"On this one, I let myself be, at least in the way I was approaching the thing, freer," Abrams said in his interview with the entertainment news outlet, "I also found myself doing things that I'm not sure I would have been as daring to do on Episode 7."

We like the word daring. There's a whole lot riding on The Rise of Skywalker. Not only is the film supposed to serve as the final entry in Lucasfilm's sequel trilogy, but it's also supposed to serve as the final chapter in the Skywalker saga. Episode IX ought to go out with a bang. There's no room for doubt and uncertainty when working on such an important entry in the franchise.

We can't wait to see what kind of risks Abram managed to take in The Rise of Skywalker. We wonder whether the filmmaker's output is as bold and as daring as he promises it to be.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker premieres December 20, 2019.
