Oscar-nominated actor and director Jesse Eisenberg has been granted Polish citizenship days after his film A Real Pain won an Oscar.
He revealed last year that he had applied for Polish citizenship after shooting A Real Pain in Poland "to create better relationships between Jews and Polish people."
Jesse Eisenberg Granted Polish Citizenship
Days after A Real Pain took home an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, Eisenberg has officially been granted a Polish citizenship by President Andrzej Duda.
A ceremony was held in New York City to celebrate the Oscar nominee's milestone.
"I’m so unbelievably honored. This is an honor of a lifetime and something I have been very interested in for two decades," Eisenberg said in his speech.
The Oscar nominee was inspired to apply for Polish citizenship after filming A Real Pain in Poland. He was eligible since he has direct ancestors who were born in the country or lived there after 1920.
"While we were filming this movie in Poland and I was walking the streets and starting to get a little more comfortable in the country, something so obvious occurred to me, which is that my family had lived in this place far longer than we’ve lived in New York," Eisenberg said.
"And of course, the history ended so tragically, but in addition to that tragedy of history was also the tragedy that my family didn’t feel any connection anymore to Poland. And that saddened me and confirmed for me that I really wanted to try to reconnect as much as possible."
What is Jesse Eisenberg's A Real Pain About?
A Real Pain focuses on mismatched cousins David (Eisenberg) and Benji (Kieran Culkin) reunite for a tour through Poland to honor their beloved grandmother.
The adventure takes a turn when the odd-couple's old tensions resurface against the backdrop of their family history.
Eisenberg directed, co-starred, wrote, and co-produced the film. It marked his second directorial work. Emma Stone also served as one of the producers.
Culkin won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his performance as Benji Kaplan. He also swept all major televised and critics' awards throughout the seasons.
