Jeremy Renner recently addressed the surprising news regarding Robert Downey Jr.'s MCU return as Doctor Doom.

Last weekend, Marvel Studios officially announced during their San Diego Comic-Con Hall H presentation that the Oscar winner is returning to the MCU as the fan-favorite villain in the upcoming Avengers movies.

Many fans were shocked by the news as they never thought Downey would take the villainous route for his return and the general responses online have been divisive.

In a recent interview, Renner reacted to the news regarding Downey's surprise MCU return as Doctor Doom.

He revealed that he and the other original Avengers cast were kept in the dark about the announcement and he was as surprised as we were when he learned the news.

"I had no idea. This son of a b*tch didn’t say anything to me, and we’re good friends," the Hawkeye actor said.

Renner also "started blowing up [Downey’s] phone" in the group chat of the original Avengers when he learned the news.

"I’m like, ‘What’s going on? Are you hiding this from us?’ I don’t know. That’s exciting news, man. I’m really, really excited about it," he added.

When asked whether he will be returning in the upcoming Avengers movies alongside Downey, Renner played coy in his response.

"I’m excited about it. We’ll see. I think we’ll probably be doing it. We’ll have to figure it out. It’s all brand new. It all just happened. They just made the announcement, so I guess we got to start figuring it all out," he teased.

With Downey confirmed to return, it sets a precedent for the potential return of the other original Avengers cast whether they're reprising the role or playing a different character/variant.

It is curious to see how it all plays out in the coming months as the development of the movies is ongoing, and hopefully, we will get more details about their plans soon.
