A beardless Jason Momoa was not on our 2025 bingo card, and yet here we are.

While a playful nod to his Dune character, Duncan Idaho, his main motivation was to promote Mananalu, his initiative to eliminate single-use plastics. Check out his bare face below!

Why Did Jason Momoa Shave His Beard After Six Years?

“Haven’t shaved in six years, and here we are again,” Momoa wrote in the caption after posting a video on Instagram of the entire shaving process.

Momoa’s beard is nothing short of being part of his signature look, but the 45-year-old actor insists he officially returns to the Duncan Idaho mode, his character in the Dune franchise.

“Only for you, Denis,” Momoa said in his video, referring to his Dune filmmaker Denis Villeneuve. Momoa later expressed his reaction to seeing himself bare after six years, “Godd***it! I hate it.”

Apart from reprising his role in Dune: Part Three, though, he specifically used the shaving video to catch the audience’s attention by promoting Mananalu, a platform he launched to eliminate single-use plastic.

“Now, we’re taking it even further, partnering with our team @Getboomerangwater to bring in a closed-loop system that sanitizes and bottles water onsite,” Momoa explained, “That means even less waste, reduced shipping footprint, and our aluminum bottles get reused over and over.”

“This is the future, and we’re starting in Hawai’i,” Momoa continued, “Let’s get rid of single-use plastic. For our children and for our planet. All my aloha, J.”

When Was the Last Time Jason Momoa Shaved Off His Beard?

Fans might be shocked to hear that this isn’t the first time Momoa shaved his beard. Previously, he did the same thing: shaving it off for the first time in seven years, which was in April 2019.

At the time, Momoa used his signature beard to make a personal change and get his point across in saving the environment through his own means.

“Goodbye Drogo, Aquaman, Declan, [and] Baba!” Momoa wrote, referencing his most iconic bearded characters from Game of Thrones, Aquaman, Frontier, and TV show, See, “I’m shaving this beast off, it’s time to make a change.”

The last time Momoa shaved (since 2018) was back in 2012, when he cut away the long beard to bare his chin in the middle of the desert. The transformation was inspired by a new line of canned water he was helping launch with the Ball Corporation.

“I wanted to make my own water so I could be an example,” Momoa said, “So I had a product I could take out to give to the world. And that I could take to other companies in hope that they could do the same. I’m on a quest. It’s my journey.”

Meanwhile, Jason Momoa reprises Duncan Idaho in Dune: Part Three, which premieres December 18, 2026.
