First announced in late 2023 under James Wan's (Saw, Insidious, Aquaman) Atomic Monster banner with Gary Dauberman (IT, Annabelle) set to write and showrun, the project aimed to adapt the 1994 animated classic into a dark, cinematic live-action version.
However, with Disney looking to cut back on its lowest-priority projects, Gargoyles has been taken off the development stack to join the rest of Walt Disney's shelved adaptations.
At Fan Expo Chicago 2026, Gargoyles creator Greg Weisman, who created the cult classic series that ran for three seasons from 1994-1997, shared with ComicsOnline that the live-action reboot series is "dead," with no idea on any other plan to pursue the franchise altogether.
"Well, I know the live-action side of it is, uh, the Atomic Monster had the license to develop a live-action Gargoyles for Disney+, and that's dead," Weisman said, "I have no idea about animation, but there are no current plans for live-action."
The live-action Gargoyles reboot was supposed to have focused on Goliath, the final member of a heroic race of gargoyles, who, after being freed from a curse that turned him into stone for centuries, would have solved past mysteries while protecting present-day New York City with the help of police detective Elisa Maza.
