One of the upcoming MCU projects for Disney+ that are in the works is The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, a holiday-themed television special featuring the titular team. According to previous reports, the special is supposedly filming simultaneously with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 which has already started production. But as it turns out, that might not be the case yet.
In an interview with Collider, director James Gunn was asked about the latest update on The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special to which he revealed that it actually hasn't started filming yet due to the contingencies related to the pandemic although it is still confirmed to go on.
He said, "It's still upcoming in the shoot. We were supposed to shoot one day in LA, and there's too much Omicron around, so we couldn't do it. We're going to have to fit it in. I haven't started yet. I'm excited too. It's fun. The holiday special is... I'm almost jealous of it, even though I wrote it because people freak out so much on how much they love the script for the holiday special that I'm almost like, 'Well, wait. I've got this movie here I've been working on for two years. You love the holiday special that I literally wrote in a very short amount of time.' But, it is really funny and really good."
Even though the holiday special hasn't started filming, Gunn was able to assure that it is still happening and the reactions to the script have been enthusiastic which makes it more exciting for fans who are looking forward to seeing it. Of course, due to the rising cases related to the Omicron variant, there have been obstacles to headstart the production, and the fact that they are deep into filming the third film definitely adds to the challenge.
