Ever since we've been getting more Spider-Men onscreen, there has been this ongoing debate of which Peter Parker is the best one. As it turns out, Jake Gyllenhaal thinks that Tom Holland ‘is the closest thing to Spider-Man we've got.'
Talking during the premiere of Spider-Man: Far from Home, the Mysterio actor explained:
"[Tom Holland's] a great guy, but I think more than that he's also a physical actor. He's a dancer, and he's also a gymnast, so I think you feel that he can actually do these things. It's not just like, ‘Oh, it's a double, it's someone else,' Our doubles do amazing stuff, but the character's in his body. I think he's also a good-hearted person, and that's what Peter Parker is too. So he's the closest thing to Spider-Man we've got."
It's funny we should get this kind of support from Gyllenhaal seeing as he's playing the villain in Far from Home, but then again, it's said that Mysterio and Spider-Man will actually have more of a brotherly relationship before things start turning south.
I think it's also worth noting that Gyllenhaal was very close to playing Spider-Man himself. After Tobey Maguire's back injury from Seabiscuit, Gyllenhaal was set to replace Maguire in Spider-Man 2, even going so far as to get a costume fitting. But good thing is, Maguire was able to recover on time and reprise the role.
If anything, everyone is happy that Gyllenhaal got cast, and I can't wait to see what he brings to the table in Far from Home.
Catch Spider-Man: Far from Home when it hits theaters July 2.
