While James Gunn has indeed kept his promise on bringing a new DCU fans have long dreamed of, his response to Henry Cavill's exit remains a mystery to be uncovered. Now, it seems Gunn has finally shed some light on how they brought the terrible news to the former Man of Steel.

What Happened with Henry Cavill's DC Departure and How Did James Gunn Handle It?

Every DC fan can agree that no one saw Cavill's exit coming. But did you know Gunn himself wasn't aware of the departure plans, either? In late 2022, Cavill announced he would be returning to play the Man of Steel, only for the studios to issue a statement contradicting what fans had anticipated.

"It was terrible... the day our [DC] deal closed, all of a sudden, they were announcing that Henry was back," Gunn said on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, recalling the time he and co-head Peter Safran took over DC. "And I'm like, 'What is going on?' We know what the plan is. The plan was to come in and do Superman."

So, as much as Gunn still wanted Cavill to work on his DCU opening, turns out that the former Man of Steel was "never part of the equation." In turn, Gunn said, this was "really unfair to [Henry] and a total bummer."

"That was really unfortunate," Gunn continued, driving him and Safran to think of the right way to sit down with Cavill about it. "We sat down and talked to him. He was an absolute gentleman, a great guy about it. He said, 'The only thing I ask is that I'm able to reveal it myself as opposed to it coming from you guys."

How Does Cavill and Corenswet's Man of Steel Affect the DCU?

Just because Henry Cavill's time as the Man of Steel was short-lived doesn't mean fans won't ever remember him.

If anything, Cavill took that experience to help the new face of Big Blue, David Corenswet, as the latter revealed he had received some advice from former Man of Steel stars like him.

There is no absolute right or wrong Superman—Cavill and Corenswet happen to reflect the era of two very different versions of the DC Universe. While Cavill reflects the "Super" in Big Blue, Corenswet embodies the "Man" in Superman, which shows the world that he is far more than an "alien superhero."
