With the recent release of Zootopia 2, fans are already wondering whether Disney is working on a third movie that will expand the franchise with new world-building.
The highly anticipated sequel to the Disney animated movie hit was finally released in theaters to both box office and critical success. It's already projected to become one of the highest-grossing films of this year. Critics are already hailing it as Disney's best animated film in recent years and one of their best sequels of all time.
Given its massive success already, questions are now popping up about the future of the Zootopia franchise.
Is Disney Already Working on Zootopia 3?
So far, Disney has no official plans yet to do a third Zootopia movie anytime soon, but given the second movie's successful opening, it won't be surprising if it happens in the future.
In a recent interview with Polygon, co-director Byron Howard acknowledged that there are "endless" possibilities in expanding the franchise, including a potential third movie.
"It is endless, I think, because it is built around the fact that [just watching] the normal functioning of the world is entertainment itself," he said.
Co-director Jared Bush also added, "Honestly, I think our job is to have people walk out of a theater [and] go, like, ‘That was great! Man, I want more of that!’ I think that's the goal. And I think with this movie, we really tried hard to say, 'This is how you can expand [the Zootopia world]’ that allows people to say, 'And you could expand it even more!' I think that's the goal every single time we go into this world."
With the massive world of Zootopia, there are opportunities to explore other animals and species within its universe.
"There's so much room still to play in the world of Zootopia. I am sure there are other animals I want to see, other environments that exist in our real world that it's like, ‘Well, will we get to see that in Zootopia?’" said co-head of story Carrie Liao.
What is Zootopia 2 About?
In Zootopia 2, Detectives Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde are back. They find themselves on the twisting trail of a mysterious reptile who arrives in Zootopia and turns the mammal metropolis upside down. To crack the case, Judy and Nick must go undercover to unexpected new parts of town, where their growing partnership is tested like never before.
The star-studded cast includes Ginnifer Goodwin, Jason Bateman, Ke Huy Quan, Fortune Feimster, Shakira, Idris Elba, Quinta Brunson, Patrick Warburton, Andy Samberg, Bonnie Hunt, Don Lake, Nate Torrence, Jenny Slate, Alan Tudyk, and many more.
Jared Bush and Byron Howard (who also helmed the first) directed the film. It was recently released in theaters worldwide.
