The early reactions to the highly anticipated film The Social Reckoning are out online. Is it worth watching, according to them?

Sixteen years after The Social Network was released and became a modern cinema classic, the companion film The Social Reckoning is finally arriving in theaters and will explore issues surrounding Facebook over the last several years. Some audiences have been wondering whether the new movie will be able to live up to the hype.

Is The Social Reckoning Worth Watching? Here's What the Early Reactions Are Saying

Critics and influencers who watched the early screenings of The Social Reckoning recently shared their early reactions on social media and weigh in on whether they think it lives up to expectations.

So far, responses have been mixed to positive, with a strong consensus that it does not live up to the same top-tier level as The Social Network.

Most of the praise has been directed towards the performances of the cast and the topical subject matter. However, there were also criticisms of the direction and the lack of impact compared to the previous film.

In his post on X, Zach Pope wrote that The Social Reckoning is "better than expected, but still slightly disappointing because it never delivers the IMPACT its story feels like it needed" and "throws a ton of information, context, and material that could hit incredibly hard if you weren’t closely following everything as it happened. Making the movie feel very surface level."

Jazz Tangcay called the new film "a painfully timely story. Mikey Madison shines and is fantastic in this. Her delivery of [Aaron] Sorkin’s words is great. I really enjoyed it, but it made me want to delete all my social media."

Tom Chatalbash praised The Social Reckoning as "a timely and compelling companion piece to The Social Network, sharing more DNA with Sorkin’s The Newsroom than its predecessor, however. Madison and [Jeremy] Allen White are quietly magnetic."

Luke Hearfield wrote that the new film is a "solid sequel" and "it completely justifies its existence as a scathing indictment of the current tumultuous state of society in both the physical spaces and the digital ones." However, he also noted that "the ending verges on corny and Sorkin’s writing is once again the hero ingredient comparatively to his direction, but I still came away from this very impressed."

The review embargo is expected to be lifted on Wednesday, just two days before the film's wide release in North America.

What Is The Social Reckoning About?

Inspired by true events and the whistleblower who started the social media reckoning we’re seeing play out today, The Social Reckoning is a companion piece to the hit film The Social Network and a true David and Goliath story.

Frances Haugen, a young Facebook engineer, enlists the help of Jeff Horwitz, a Wall Street Journal reporter, to go on a dangerous journey that ends up blowing the whistle on the social network’s most guarded secrets.

The cast includes Mikey Madison, Jeremy Allen White, Wunmi Mosaku, Betty Gilpin, Billy Magnussen, Bill Burr, and Jeremy Strong. Aaron Sorkin directed, wrote, and co-produced the film.

It is set to arrive in theaters this Friday, October 9, in North America.
