Is One Piece’s Luffy Immune to Poison?
Monkey D. Luffy or Straw Hat Luffy is one of the strongest anime characters of all time. He is the founder and the top fighter of the Straw Hat Pirates.
His objective is to find the One Piece treasure that was left by Gol D. Roger. If he succeeds, he will become the Pirate King, giving him the freedom he longs to have.
In the series, Luffy started as a normal individual. His life changed when he accidentally ate the Gomu Gomu no Mi which made his body turn into rubber.
During his adventure, he gained other abilities like making his fist as hard as iron, flying, and even knocking out his enemies by using his Haki.
There are also some fans who were quick to notice that Luffy might be immune to poison. But if so, how did he acquire this ability?
How Did Luffy Become Immune to Poison?
One Piece introduced tons of characters who use poison to fight. Of course, these characters gain the advantage as they can easily win a fight once their enemy is weakened by poison.
In the series, it appeared that Luffy was able to develop a resistance to poison.
This ability started when he was in Impel Down, which is a prison known to have dangerous criminals.
During his stay, he got into a fight with Magellan, the chief warden. The warden uses his venom to win by inflicting different kinds of poison on Luffy.
The captain tried his best to win but because of the amount of poison that his body acquired, there was not enough time to make an antidote.
His friend, Mr. 2 Bon Clay, remembered Emporio Ivankov, a miracle worker that can save Luffy. What Ivankov did was boost Luffy’s immune system by using Horm-Horm Fruit.
Luffy’s body started to break down before healing itself and fighting the poison. The process took 10 hours, which actually lessened Luffy’s life by 10 years.
So, Is Luffy Fully Immune to Poison?
Luffy has a high resistance to poison, but it doesn’t mean he is fully immune. The effect will still depend on the poison, but overall, this ability is extremely helpful to Luffy.
In other words, Luffy’s immunity to poison is not guaranteed. It is not perfect at all, but poison at this point will not do any serious harm to Luffy’s body in the long run.
For instance, Luffy wasn’t able to fight on his own during his rematch with Magellan. Thanks to Mr. 3’s coating brought about by his Wax Wax Devil Fruit, Luffy was able to protect his arms and legs against Magellan’s toxins.
Meanwhile, on Fish-Man Island, Luffy faced the merman Hyouzou, whose touch contains deadly poison. But due to his experience fighting Magellan, Luffy managed to overcome Hyouzou’s poison effortlessly.
The same thing happened with Caesar Clown’s poisonous gas, which Luffy inhaled during Punk Hazard. Thankfully, Luffy only passed out from it after dealing with the mad scientist.
During their rematch, Luffy’s hands only got petrified after Caesar Clown merged his body with the Land of the Dead chemical weapon.
Another incident happened during the Whole Cake Island arc, where Luffy ate a poisonous armored stonefish.
Contrary to the immediate deadly effect on ordinary people, Luffy only got unconscious before he needed to be saved.
The funny thing is, when Luffy and Zoro reunited to save O-tama, they both ate their hearts out even though their food was poisonous before doing their plan.
It usually kills a normal person, but for Luffy and Zoro, the poison is worth their hunger.
