Mark Harmon is returning to the NCIS world as he is executive producing the prequel spinoff series NCIS: Origins, but will he also make an appearance on-screen?
The new series, set in 1991, will focus on the early investigative career of Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs. Austin Stowell will play the younger version of the iconic character.
Mark Harmon's Involvement in NCIS: Origins
Despite his departure from the original NCIS series years ago, Harmon is heavily involved in Origins as one of the executive producers.
Not only that, he will also serve as the narrator of the series as the present-day version of Gibbs is relaying the story of the cases that he investigated in the past.
Harmon's participation will be similar to Jim Parsons' involvement in Young Sheldon, which centered on the younger years of the iconic The Big Bang Theory character Dr. Sheldon Cooper.
In that hit CBS sitcom, Parsons was also involved as both executive producer and narrator of the series. You can expect a similar scenario for Harmon when you watch Origins.
Will Mark Harmon Make an On-Screen Appearance in NCIS: Origins?
Fortunately for fans, you can expect an on-screen appearance from Harmon when the pilot episode of NCIS: Origins airs this October 14.
The original NCIS star will briefly show up where he will be seen relaying his story from the past.
"That was a discussion between Mark, myself, and [co-showrunner] Gina Monreal. I hope the audience will be excited to see him after so many years," co-showrunner David J. North said during last month's panel discussion.
Another report also confirmed that Harmon is expected to occasionally appear on-screen throughout the series as the present-day Gibbs.
It is unknown yet how they will exactly show the present-day Gibbs in the story of the series whether he is relaying the story to another character, writing a book, or retelling his cases in an interview.
Fans should tune in to the series to find out how the present-day Gibbs will play in the origin story as well as see Harmon in the role again years after his high-profile departure.
