KonoSuba continues to be an incredibly popular isekai, especially now that it’s back with a new season. For those who haven’t seen it yet, they may be wondering if KonoSuba is any good.
Of course, its brand of comedy may not exactly be for everyone, but given its popularity and positive critical reception, it’s fair to say that KonoSuba is a good show in the eyes of many viewers.
The series’ appeal is thanks in large part to its hilarious twist on the isekai genre, combined with its entertaining cast.
Why Is KonoSuba So Popular? An Irreverent Isekai
Isekai anime have been popular for over a decade now, and while some fans already have isekai fatigue, the genre is showing no signs of slowing down.
Sure, there are lots of typical power fantasy isekai shows out there, but KonoSuba is not one of them. Instead, it’s more of an isekai parody that balances comedy with a surprisingly compelling world.
Right at the start, KonoSuba shows that it’s not your typical series, as its protagonist, Kazuma Sato, doesn’t get transported into another world with a powerful ability.
Instead, he arrives in the fantasy world with Aqua, a goddess who turns out to be useless.
The typical isekai fantasy trajectory will follow the protagonist as he forms a party and journeys to face the Devil King. This is not the case with KonoSuba.
While Kazuma does form a party, they typically get roped into various misadventures instead of going on a grand adventure. What’s funny is, in their travels, they inadvertently face various Devil King generals.

Kazuma’s Party Is Equally Strong as It Is Dysfunctional
On paper, Kazuma’s party is incredibly strong. Kazuma has nifty abilities and tactical knowledge; Aqua is a potent healer; Megumin has devastating offensive magic; and Darkness is exceptionally tanky.
Their exceptional abilities are balanced out by the fact that barring Kazuma, they are as dumb as a bag of rocks.
It doesn’t help that they all have different quirks and limitations, leading to Kazuma’s constant irritation.
The party’s dysfunctional dynamic leads to lots of hilarious sequences, though it’s compelling to watch as their powers do come together when it counts.
Moreover, the characters are also a joy to watch because of how funnily they interact with each other and the people in their world.

Stellar Acting by KonoSuba’s Voice Cast
While the original light novel already offers a compelling read, the KonoSuba anime’s voice cast no doubt elevates the story and makes the comedic scenarios all the more hilarious.
Aside from the VAs of Kazuma’s party, the rest of the cast are also great in their roles to the point that they can more than make up for parts with spotty animation, at least in the previous seasons.
Thanks to its subversive take on the genre and a hilarious main cast voiced by top-notch anime VAs, KonoSuba continues to be one of the most popular isekai right now.
Even those suffering from isekai fatigue should give the series a watch.
