One of the biggest questions that audiences have is whether the spinoff series IT: Welcome to Derry is a prequel or a sequel to the two-part movies.
The new HBO horror series has been a major hit in the last several weeks, not just because of the IP familiarity, but also due to its expansion of the mythology that originated in the Stephen King novel. However, there is still confusion for newcomers to the series on whether it is a prequel to the movies or can be considered as a continuation instead.
Is IT: Welcome to Derry a Prequel or Sequel to the Movies?
Considering that the first season of IT: Welcome to Derry takes place in 1962, the series can be considered a prequel to the movies.
However, with the shocking revelation regarding Pennywise's time jump ability in the first season finale, it can also be seen as a sequel in the eyes of the villainous clown.
While the answer may sound complicated, it is still connected to the two-part movies, nonetheless, and this is still worth watching if you want to learn more about the world of IT and the complicated origins of Pennywise and his terrifying adventures before his encounter with the Losers Club in the late '80s.
Speaking with TVLine after the first season finale aired, director and executive producer Andy Muschietti confirmed that they have a three-season plan for the series, and the subsequent seasons will take place further in the past.
"From the genesis of this project, we had the idea to make it three seasons, aligning with the three more important catastrophic events that are described in the interludes [of the book]," he explained.
"Those are the burning of the Black Spot in '62 — well, in the book, the dates are different, because we did a transport of the periods — but then the massacre of the Bradley Gang in '35, and the explosion at the Easter egg hunt in 1908. It was always that blueprint for us. We wanted to make a three-season event story."
Is IT: Welcome to Derry Already Renewed for a Second Season?
So far, HBO has not renewed IT: Welcome to Derry for a second season, but considering that it is a ratings hit, it wouldn't be surprising if they make an announcement very soon.
Executive producer Barbara Muschietti shared that both sides have been in active discussions for the renewal, but noted that they have to settle the budget issues first.
"It's a high bar [of quality to produce], and it's also not a cheap show. But I think everybody's intention is to make it," she said.
Hopefully, we'll hear confirmation about the renewal very soon, as fans are hoping to see the other two seasons that they are planning for the series.
