There are a few key traits that define a good sports anime. The usual action-adventure sports anime often features stunning art, fast-paced and smooth animation, engaging and sometimes outrageous battles, and characters with clear goals and unwavering determination.
Invincible Fight Girl seems to check all these boxes. But is it an anime or just anime-inspired? What is the story behind this show? Find out the details below.
Is Invincible Fight Girl an Anime or Just Anime-inspired?
Invincible Fight Girl premiered on Adult Swim’s Toonami block on November 3, known for showcasing anime and action cartoons.
In this show, Andy aspires to become a pro wrestler just like everyone else in her world, but her dream is challenged by being born into a family of ordinary accountants.
The interesting thing about this world is that wrestling isn’t just a hobby. It’s deeply ingrained in the culture, where being a great pro wrestler means having fame and fortune.
If this setup reminds you of anime where a world is centered around one passion, like My Hero Academia focusing on heroes or Hunter x Hunter on hunters, that’s intentional. Invincible Fight Girl parodies anime by combining focused storytelling with nods to anime conventions.
Created by Juston Gordon-Montgomery, the show leans more toward an American action cartoon while drawing from anime tropes and references to popular titles.
Montgomery shared in an interview with The Verge that his inspirations came from both pro wrestling and anime series like Naruto, Pokémon, and Hajime no Ippo.
He also mentioned that he wanted to create a show where wrestling is not only the protagonist’s true calling but also the main focus of the entire narrative. Much like in many shounen anime, where a single interest drives the world and we uncover more about the lore as the characters grow, he sought to capture the essence of the sport throughout the story.
Why You Should be Watching Invincible Fight Girl
With its creative premise and the dedication poured into this long-awaited passion project, Invincible Fight Girl has all the makings of a fan-favorite on Toonami’s roster of action-packed animated shows. In fact, fans are already excited about its potential to gain popularity.
If you’re into anime or grew up hooked on the drama of WWE, this show is for you. It takes a childhood question many of us had—“What if wrestling in WWE were actually real?”—and runs with it in the most entertaining way possible.
Through Andy's journey, viewers are treated to a fresh take on the familiar tropes of anime, with each character’s development tied to the central theme of wrestling as both a personal dream and a cultural obsession.
On top of that, the series boasts eye-catching animation and stellar voice performances, making it a joy to watch from start to finish!
