- Quick Answer: The Plane sequel, Ship, is officially canceled. Star Mike Colter confirmed that Gerard Butler's last-minute exit from the production caused the project to dissolve entirely.
The Gerard Butler-led film Plane became a surprise solid box office success when it was released in early 2023. As a result, they started developing a sequel titled Ship that would continue Louis Gaspare's story.
However, since then, we have not heard a new update on whether the highly anticipated follow-up is still in the works after all these years. Now, we finally have the latest status coming from its star, and it looks like a sequel is no longer imminent.
Is Plane 2 Still Happening? Mike Colter Reveals

In a recent interview with The Direct at Fan Expo Vancouver, Mike Colter shared the latest update on the development of the Plane sequel, where he was set to reprise the role of Louis Gaspare.
However, unfortunately, he revealed to the outlet that the sequel has been canceled. The project was on the verge of starting production, but Gerard Butler, who also serves as producer, decided to pull the plug.
"It just, last-minute, Gerard decided he didn’t want to go forward with it, and there wasn’t a lot of discussion about it," Colter shared. "He just… two weeks out, he pulled out, and we were sort of left trying to figure out what to do. And eventually, that dissolved."
The actor added that the sequel would have addressed the cliffhanger ending for his character in Plane, and the script made him excited to be involved.
"The script. Basically picking up where we left off, what happened to that character, and how’d he get off the island. That was where we were gonna go with it. So, I was excited about it," Colter said.
So far, there are no plans to revive the project anytime soon.
What is Plane About?
Plane follows a pilot who finds himself caught in a war zone after he's forced to land his commercial aircraft on an island in the Philippines during a terrible storm.
It was released in January 2023 and ended up being a solid box office success, as it grossed more than $74 million worldwide against a $25 million budget. It received mostly positive reviews from critics and audiences.
According to past reports, the potential sequel would have seen Louis escape the Philippines and travel on a cargo ship bound for South Africa, upon which he discovers a human trafficking ring. It is unknown whether Butler's character would have made a cameo appearance or not.
