Is Death and Other Details Based on a Book?
Most murder mysteries are based on books, such as Death on the Nile, Murder on the Orient Express, and The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. So is Death and Other Details based on a book too?
The show creators, Heidi Cole McAdams and Mike Weiss revealed that Death and Other Details was not based on a book. Instead, they drew inspiration from Agatha Christie's works.
Christie has since dominated the genre with her signature whodunit classics. Inspired by the genre that the famed author created, McAdams and Weiss tried to capture this with Death and Other Details too.

One way they did that is by adding an interesting mix of characters in a meticulous location. This time, it's on board a cruise ship.
Weiss told ScreenRant:
The inspiration behind the series was a couple of things. First, it was the murder mystery genre. Heidi and I have been friends for a decade, and the pilot of this show was actually the very first thing that we wrote together. We knew we wanted to work together, and so we were figuring out, “What is the right story for us to combine all the various things that we’re interested in? Where does that Venn diagram line up?” It turned out to be a stylish murder, in this case, with season 1 being set on a restored 1940s ocean liner that is sailing the Mediterranean.”
