James Gunn recently shared a new update on the long-gestating sequel to the 2005 film Constantine starring Keanu Reeves.
For the last few years, there have been attempts to do a follow-up with Reeves and director Francis Lawrence on board to return. However, there has been no significant movement in its development, as DC Studios is still focused on shaping the DCU franchise. Fans are wondering whether the sequel will still happen or the DCU will just introduce a new version of John Constantine with a different actor.
Is Constantine 2 with Keanu Reeves Still Happening?

In an interview with BobaTalks (via Screen Rant), Gunn was asked whether the sequel to Constantine is still in the works today after years of development.
He shared that there had been on-and-off talks regarding the project, but he has not read any script yet from the people involved.
"I’ve discussed it on and off. I've discussed it with Keanu. I think that’s a great group of guys. I like all those people a lot, I think they’re talented. But I have not read any script yet," the DC Studios co-chairman said.
Gunn's comments come as Reeves revealed earlier this year in another interview that they have already pitched an idea to DC Studios and they were preparing to write a script.
"We’ve been trying to make this film for over a decade, and we just recently put a story together and pitched it to DC Studios, and they said, ‘OK.’ So, we’re going to try and write a script," the actor told Inverse.
If you're wondering whether the DCU will introduce its version of John Constantine, Gunn did not hint at any plans to do so anytime soon.
What is Constantine 2 About?
So far, the story details that are being planned for Constantine 2 are still under wraps, since the script is being written.
Speaking with Collider, Director Francis Lawrence teased some of the ideas they have in store for the sequel and how they're planning to pay tribute to the character's comic history.
"We have a great idea. We have gone through a bunch of the comics over the years and looked at things," he said.
"I will say that there's probably grains from things that we're pulling, but in truth, most of it is just coming from the three of us, you know, loving the character, loving the world, having it sort of in the back of our minds for 20 years and just kind of percolating on ideas, and stories and characters we love, and ideas we love."
Reeves also teased the ideas for the sequel when he spoke to Inverse, "We're not going off that. John Constantine's going to be tortured even more."
