The new A24 erotic thriller film Babygirl starring Nicole Kidman and Harris Dickinson takes place in the Christmas season, a setting that surprised the audiences who watched it considering the genre.

If you haven't seen the trailer months ago, you might be wondering if it's a Christmas movie despite its heavily matured tone and why they decided to set it in the holiday season.

Babygirl's Christmas Setting Explained

The final results that we watched in Babygirl saw the erotic thriller story being set in the Christmas season.

However, the film was not originally supposed to take place in the holiday season when director-writer Halina Reijn penned the script.

"I wrote it as a summer movie, it was all going to take place in the Hamptons and it was going to be on the beach," she said in an interview.

"Then the strike happened, of course it was pencils down and we had to wait, and then the schedule became Christmas. And I was like, ‘We should definitely make this into a Christmas movie,’ and after the strike, I just rewrote the whole thing to Christmas."

With its Christmas setting, the film "had such a special meaning to me because the character is trying to be this perfect woman and this perfect mother and perfect leader. And the whole sort of American idea of Christmas is so I felt like that’s perfect, it’s all so performative in a way."

While the film is not the traditional Christmas movie that we expect, the Christmas backdrop is still pivotal enough to consider it as a "Christmas movie" in some ways and it helps that it arrived in theaters in that period.
