Idris Elba has officially shut down the long-running rumors that he was ever in serious contention to succeed Daniel Craig as James Bond. Speaking candidly with British GQ while promoting his sci-fi fantasy film Masters of the Universe, the 53-year-old actor revealed that the massive wave of public speculation linking him to the iconic 007 role was "never legit."
"I've always felt that it's not a realistic thing," he told the outlet, taking into consideration how fans consistently pitched him for the role, "James Bond was written how he was written for a reason. But I was complimented by it."
He did, however, note that his potential casting would not have been in the cards for him: "I think, in realistic terms, some markets just don't go for that. Bond is big all over the world. And [audiences] won't [all] go for a Black male, an African male, playing Bond. That's not what they like in their culture. Period."
Elba emphasized that the character should remain pure to Ian Fleming's original material as a form of classic cinematic escapism rather than to "answer the world's taste", aka the political climate.
"Bond is so unrealistic, so a hint of reality is good, but let's not try and make it woke," Elba continued, "I think you've got to be pure to what it is: escapism. Don't try, and answer the world's taste. Just be Bond."
Amazon MGM Studios' Casting List for the Next Agent 007

With Elba out of the picture, Amazon MGM Studios is officially starting fresh, and recently confirmed that auditions for Bond 26 are actively underway.
The studio has enlisted acclaimed casting director Nina Gold, famous for her work on Game of Thrones and The Crown, to lead the talent search being kept under wraps. Alongside Dune director Denis Villeneuve and screenwriter Steven Knight, the creative team is reportedly looking to cast a much younger actor, specifically looking at talent in their late 20s to carry the franchise for the next decade.
While the studio has no comment on any specific candidate while auditions keep going, industry insiders have already teased a competitive shortlist.
One of those names is Tom Francis, the 26-year-old British actor best known for his Olivier-winning role in the stage musical, Sunset Boulevard, a source told Variety last month. Other stars heavily rumored to be in the mix include Frankenstein and Euphoria star Jacob Elordi, Bullet Train and Kraven the Hunter's Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Eternity and Fantastic Beasts' Callum Turner.
