With the upcoming release of Tron: Ares in theaters, fans have been wondering how the new installment in the franchise will have a connection to the previous movies.
The new movie, which is considered to be a soft reboot of the movie franchise, will focus on a new character played by Jared Leto. While the trailers and other promotional materials have hinted that there are elements that have some connection to the previous films, there is still a lot of mystery regarding its expansion of the Tron world and whether the ending of Legacy will be addressed.
How is Tron: Ares Connected to the Previous Movies in the Franchise?
Despite being a soft reboot of the movie franchise, Tron: Ares will still have major connections to the previous installments of the franchise and acknowledge their canon.
The biggest connection that fans should look out for is the return of Jeff Bridges as Kevin Flynn, the main character in the past movies. His appearance is expected to be a supporting role.
Given that the character seemingly died at the end of Legacy due to his sacrifice in the Grid, it remains unknown how his appearance will play out in the story, whether it's a resurrection or a different version of the character through artificial intelligence (AI) inside the world of the film.
The Dillinger family legacy and ENCOM will also have major roles in the story of the film. Evan Peters and Gillian Anderson will play members of the Dillinger family, while Greta Lee's character is the current CEO of ENCOM. However, don't count on an appearance from Cillian Murphy's Ed Dillinger Jr.
The other details regarding the new film's connection are still under wraps, so it would the best for fans to just watch the film to find out more about the connection. Nevertheless, we know at the very least that the lore and canon in the past movies will matter in the events of Ares.
