For the past several years, we've seen how social media changed celebrity culture as their public lives are now accessible as well as increased scrutiny than ever before.

Whether social media can be beneficial to a celebrity's fame or not, there's no doubt that it is a game-changer in how they interact with fans and how we consume celebrity content.

Since the dawn of social media, we've seen how it has become an integral part of celebrity culture as stars use the platform to post updates about the happenings in their lives or announcements of their new projects.

It is far from what we've seen in the past where celebrities have more anonymity and we only get access to their off-camera lives through paparazzi photos or gossip tabloids. If fans want to reach out, they can only send through snail mail.

Today, thanks to social media, there is now a direct connection between a celebrity and a fan as it's only a tap away for fans to send comments on their favorite stars or for a celebrity to find out what their fans are telling about them.

As digital marketer Rahul Patel explained, social media gives celebrities "greater control over their personal branding" and "they can craft their own narratives, share behind-the-scenes glimpses of their lives, and showcase their talents without the filter of traditional media."

Since social media is accessible to almost all countries, there is potential for global reach, and celebrities "can connect with fans from around the world, spreading their message, advocating for causes, and mobilizing support for charitable endeavors."

There are also disadvantages of social media in celebrity culture since the stars are now more accessible and prone to intense scrutiny.

As Patel also laid out, there is "pressure to maintain a curated image, respond to criticism, and manage public relations can take a toll on their mental health" and a "constant barrage of comments and opinions can be overwhelming."

There is also privacy concern as stars may "find it challenging to safeguard their personal privacy as fans and the media demand access to every aspect of their lives" and "intrusive paparazzi and invasive questions remain issues despite the shift to digital platforms."

In the end, this is a new form of communication between celebrities and fans that is still being figured out as technology also evolves and there is no doubt that social media has significantly redefined celebrity culture as know it.
