Last week, word came out that Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige would be joining Lucasfilm's galaxy far, far away to help to develop a new Star Wars movie for the franchise. It was a surprising announcement, one that made Marvel and Star Wars fans go wild with excitement. But what does it mean to have the Marvel producer in Star Wars?
We can't be quite sure yet what kind of role Feige might play in the Star Wars franchise aside from developing a new film for Lucasfilm, but Forbes writer Scott Mendelson speculates that the producer may very well help develop the franchise for the long-haul.
According to Mendelson, Feige is going to help Star Wars craft crowd-pleasing protagonists and enjoyable supporting casts – a technique that ensured the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Sure, some fans might also enjoy MCU movies for its action, spectacle, and its "interconnected mythology," but these things are simply "added value elements" to the winning draw of the franchise – its super heroic protagonists.
Lucasfilm is going to need help from Feige in creating popular/winning lead characters now that Star Wars is gearing to leave the Skywalker saga with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
The Skywalker saga has been the narrative holding the franchise together. What will Star Wars look like outside of Anakin and Luke Skywalker? What will it be with Han Solo and Leia? Things are going to be very different when Star Wars' sequel trilogy is going to come to an end, and we're certain that Lucasfilm is going to need all the help that it can get.
