Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron: A Highly Anticipated Anime Film
Similar to Hayao Miyazaki’s The Wind Rises, The Boy and the Heron was inspired by a literary work—the 1937 masterpiece novel of the same name by Genzaburo Yoshino.
It was also Hayao Miyazaki’s favorite childhood book and was beloved by millions of Japanese readers.
It had a huge influence on Miyazaki’s works, and he made it the basis of his final Ghibli film.
Miyazaki described Genzaburo Yoshino’s novel as follows:
This book is a story that has great meaning for the protagonist of his film. Yoshino's book centers around a man named Koperu and his uncle, and through Koperu's spiritual growth, it discusses how to live as human beings.
Set in World War II, The Boy and the Heron, also known as How Do You Live? in Japan, revolves around Mahito and his journey with a talking heron in another world.
At such a young age, Mahito lost his mother due to the firebombings in Tokyo.
Because of this, Mahito and his father moved into the countryside, where his father remarried his late mother's pregnant sister and where he encountered the talking heron!
The Boy and the Heron anime film is under the action, adventure, and fantasy genres, so Ghibli fans can expect the film to be a roller coaster ride.
Hayao Miyazaki worked on the film beginning in 2016, after not being satisfied with doing just a CG short entitled Kemushi no Boro for the Ghibli Museum.
In December 2020, Toshio Suzuki, Studio Ghibli’s producer, even mentioned that the film would be 125 minutes long.
