Stunt performer Devyn LaBella has sued Kevin Costner and the producers of Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2 over the filming of an unscripted rape scene.
The second installment of Costner's ambitious epic western saga was scheduled to release in theaters last year, weeks after the first film. However, it was removed from the calendar, and no new date has been set yet.
Why is Devyn LaBella Suing Kevin Costner and Horizon 2 Producers?
According to The Hollywood Reporter, LaBella has filed a suit against Costner and the production companies behind Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2 for sexual discrimination, harassment, and the creation of a hostile work environment.
The stunt performer alleged that she was being subjected to an unscripted, brutal rape scene without proper notice, consent, or the presence of a contractually mandated intimacy coordinator during a filming day in May 2023.
She served as a stunt double for Ella Hunt, who is one of the main stars of the film.
LaBella also alleged that she faced retaliation after she reported the incident by not being called back for subsequent work on the Horizon series and never being hired again by the film’s stunt coordinator.
"On that day, I was left exposed, unprotected, and deeply betrayed by a system that promised safety and professionalism. What happened to me shattered my trust and forever changed how I move through this industry," LaBella said in a statement.
"This experience has ignited in me a lifelong mission to be the advocate I once needed, ensuring no one else is ever left as vulnerable as I was."
What is Kevin Costner's Response to the Lawsuit?
Costner's attorney, Martin D. Singer, has responded to the lawsuit in a statement released to the media.
He maintained that his client "always wants to make sure that everyone is comfortable working on his films and takes safety on set very seriously."
However, he added that LaBella's lawsuit has "absolutely no merit, and it is completely contradicted by her own actions — and the facts."
Singer also described LaBella as "a serial accuser of people in the entertainment industry [who] has worked with the same lawyer on past claims" and claims that "the facts are clear and we are beyond confident that Kevin will prevail."
